Quote: "I realize she was as much to blame as anything – looking back, I realize that it was probably pretty hard for Papa. People always said she was so devoted to her research, and that it came before everything else in her life, even her own family. But even when I was little, I never cared. I knew that my mother was doing very important things, and I was so proud of her. It didn’t matter that she was hardly ever home, to eat dinner with Papa and me, or to tuck me into bed and read me stories, or to fix a skinned knee with a bandage and a kiss. To me, she was still the best mother anybody could ever have. And I always believed that one day, when her work was finally finished, we’d get to do all the things that mothers and daughters should do together."
I've never seen that angle on Asuka's parents, but it actually makes a lot of sense. She was so busy, and he was so uncaring, that there is no surprise that he remarried.
Lots of hate; against Misato, against Shinji, against Rei, but I think it fits well. Not bitchifying at all, because it really shows her state of mind as she thinks all of this.
The Misato I really liked too. Serious sometimes, playful and flirty others. Not a lot of her, but I loved the scene where she became like steel and reprogrammed the simulator.
The being ignored part I've read before and I always enjoy. It reasons well with her. After all, no one likes to be ignored. Many of her actions can be justified by this, and it creates the allusion that she is attention needy, when in reality she just wants someone to look at her.
Overall: Great oneshot. A little better written then Sleep, though I can't honestly tell you if I like it more or less than This is What It's Like.
Pros: Really good characterization, clear writing, good introspection.
Cons: Can't think of a lot, really. Maybe...write...more...?
