What is Darkscribes.org about?
Basically, we're a members-only anime fan fiction website. Why members-only? Beats me.

When was Darkscribes created?
Back in late 2001 when Lord Deathscythe - along with Axel Terizaki, Myssa Elaine Rei, and some other guys I can't remember (I wasn't around then. sue me.) - got together to create their own Evafiction website.

What anime series do you focus on in particular?
We've traditionally focused on Neon Genesis Evangelion but we write about other series as well. We even do crossovers.

What about manga-only series?
That too. We'll write about anything.

What about non-anime/non-manga fan fiction?
Yes, we do that as well. If you look around the site hard enough, you'll even come across a Power Rangers fic...

What about original fiction?
Yes, damnit! We do that too!

Membership

So how do I join?
Submit an application here, submit some stories, and then an Admin will come along and review your stories and the approve your account or delete it.

Can I join even though I'm from (random country here)?
Your nationality doesn't matter. We have people from all over the globe here. Just remember that we only accept English-language material.

Yep. Themes the breaks.

So what do I get if I'm accepted?
Along with a new account, you may also receive a Darkscribes.org email address (yourname@Darkscribes.org). We're also willing to throw in some webspace, but that has to be discussed. No promises, though.

The Site

Okay, so how was Darkscribes.org created?
All of the scripting was done in PHP using a MySQL database running on a CentOS 4.4 box with the Apache web server. The web server is a pretty beefy server consisting of two AMD Dual-Core Opterons running at 2 GHz with 6 GB of RAM. All of the content is managed with custom-made User and Administrator control panels (with a few layout choices shamelessly stolen from MovableType). The frontend (markup and presentation) was done with XHTML and CSS in order to be as standards-compliant as possible. Each page is drawn on the server dynamically using Smarty and for the very complicated pages, we cache them for speedy delivery.

Can I see the source code?
Not unless I know you reasonably well.

Can you at least tell me how you did this or that?
Depends on what "this" or "that" is.

Who wrote all of the code for this site?
That would be a guy on this site by the name of "Tom". He was gracious enough to rewrite the whole site's backend scripting code for us free of charge. Big thanks to him! :) Some code was borrowed from Darkest Days' edition of DS. Multiple Open Source modules were also used. Pear DB, Pear Mail, Pear Mail MIME, Pear HTTP_Download, Pear Archive_ZIP, HTML2PDF, Smarty, jQuery, jQuery UI, and various other Open Source Modules not mentioned here.
